In amongst, between and possibly over that lot you'll also be assuaged by probably the best band change overs ever from the legendary FUKRAG MCGINTY who'll be spinning a cheeky selection of gypsy, swing, hip-hop, funk, soul, punk, and whatever else stems from the depths of his magical satchel.

This annual festival is based around City Road Lock and Basin and along the tow path to Packington Park. There will be a variety of stalls, fun-fair, music, refreshments, boat trips and viewing of Community Boats. In the Basin there is a regatta and a bell-boat race. Boat trips will be available in both directions, going east, and west through the Islington Tunnel to London Canal Museum where passengers can stop off to visit. On the water there will be displays by Islington Boat Club and a Bell Boat race between local community groups.

(Between Brackets) fait un retour sur ses origines.

Qui se souvient de Tragic Roundabout ? Rien que des vieux bien sûr...

Bon alors, mise au point, présentation et superlatifs (ça tombe bien, je reviens de Londres et j'ai acheté une toute nouvelle boîte de superlatifs).

Tragic Roundabout est un extraordinaire groupe de Brighton (uk), composé de 6 personnes. Je ne fais pas d'habitude la liste des musiciens, parce qu'il y a peu d'intérêt de savoir que Serge est à la basse et Michel aux claviers. Mais ici, ça présente un peu l'esprit du groupe alors lisez plutôt : Richard 'Animal' Schovelt au banjo, Charlie 'Guitar' Guitar au trombone, Pat Popov à la Clarinette, Elton Jo Contraire à l'accordéon, Des Lawson à la trompette basse à quatre cordes et Dave 'Lightning' Lacey à la batterie.

C'est pas un programme ça ? Qu'est ce qu'on peut bien faire comme musique avec ce genre d'orchestre?

Eh ben, c'est pas compliqué. Souvenez-vous de Rabi Jacob, la scène de la danse dans la rue. C'est comme ça, mais un plus speedé.

Joyeux, frais, marrant, et amenant une envie irrépressible de danse. Vos godasses vont chauffer car s'il n'y aura pas d'autre groupe ce soir là, ils feront au moins deux sets (voire plus si vous leur donnez envie...).

De quoi souffler et boire un coup pour les musiciens et pour vous au milieu.

La musique que vous trouverez sur le net est principalement enregistrée en live, et l'enregistrement n'est pas toujours de qualité, mais c'est définitivement un groupe de concert et de festival.

Ils sont venus ici à la Zone il y a 10 ans, pour quelques occasions, dont une soirée carnaval qui reste dans les mémoires des vétérans. Il faut dire qu'ils avaient joué jusqu'à 5 heures du mat, et encore avait-il fallu les pousser hors de la scène...

Quelques belles sessions aussi dans la vieille maison de Chez Zelle à LLN, au Couleur Café de Bastogne à la Casa Ponton et au Surlet...

Nos amis de Indica Sound feront cette rentrée avec nous pour rajouter un peu à l'ambiance. Rabi Dany et Talmud Gulud viennent avec des disques et vous assureront une descente tranquille jusqu'à l'heure que vous voulez. On ne restera pas toute la soirée dans le Klezmer, et il est à prévoir que le tempo se décalera vers le space-rock, psychédélique, ethnique et autres dance-music.

Welcome to BooooOmTowN! A once small but prosperous retreat where families and couples alike would flock. Over the years though this ideal seclusion famed for its festivities became a faded spot on the map and people began to forget about Boomtown. The inevitable isolation which followed catalysed a divide between the townspeople; lawless rebels promoted disdain and debauchery whilst the town officials tried to retain Boomtowns former glory. Boomtown Fair is back on the horizon and both factions are locked in a perpetual power struggle for control of the festival and ultimately Boomtown itself. In an effort to outdo the opposition and rejuvenate Boomtowns life-blood the law-abiding citizens, still in control of Boomtowns central promenade, have made the main stage its focal point for the festival. This electric atmosphere comprises some of the best jump-up ska / party bands from around the globe making for a truly unmissable experience. On the flipside however, the regime of anarchists run amuck in the streets of Downtown Boomtown and they have their own agenda for its annual fair. Providing music which caters to all musical tastes, the streets of Downtown Boomtown promise to be a wild and exhilarating adventure. Over 125 beers, plus over 500 gallons of cider and perry will all star in one grand big top-style marquee, pitched in a delightful riverside meadow right in the historic heart of Hereford. The location must be one of the most atmospheric for any beer festival in the UK. If you haven’t been before, then we think you’re in for a treat at our ‘friendly festival down by the river’.

I saw Tragic Roundabout live.

It was in the UK seaside resort of Brighton in the summer of 1999. The music venue where I saw Tragic Roundabout no longer exists but before it was replaced with an anonymous shopping development it was a place with character. Well to be more precise it was a shabby deserted hall with a sticky floor and cold unheated air where the acoustics squeezed the music into a funnel of hard noise. We saw a poster in a venue window and went in to see the group without ever having heard of them before, let alone listened to their music, the decision to have a couple of beers and see them was based purely on the name. The band name Tragic Roundabout is a bit of fun with the children's show called the Magic Roundabout, the Magic Roundabout children's show was a show on the BBC. Based on the name I was expecting some kind of synthesiser based tongue in cheek euro electro-pop music in the vein of the French music duo Air or a quirky British soundscape like the desolate but cheesy music pieces of Goldfrapp. The shenanigans that actually unfolded on stage were worlds away from my expectations.

First let's talk about the look. It was the summer of 1999 so I was used to the fashion stylings of Britpop bands like Blur and Pulp, a knowing uncool involving tracksuits, velvet jackets and national health specs but at the same time obviously middle class and well groomed. Tragic Roundabout would be better characterised as the great unwashed. Giant Aran jumpers with cigarette burn holes in them, trousers that had once been shapeless but which had gone beyond this relatively benign state to take on the hint of dread shapes from the collective unconscious due to the unholy forces within, all manner of fashion crimes perpetrated by all with the gay abandon of musical artists who have realised that they transcended such rules long ago.

I have to say that the musicianship on display was of an equally unkempt nature. I was watching the gig with a few friends from the Jazz course my girlfriend was attending and the looks on their faces reinforced my impression that the band had a non traditional view of music making. The vocals were rough as a badger's rear end and the instruments were all resolutely out of time, register, mood, tempo, style, octave, spatial relativity.... All was jumble, nothing matched and all was in yer face, but in a good way, at least I hoped so. I hoped they were on our side because although they gave the impression of amateurs who met at a hippie festival and came together for a single unrehearsed performance there was also something about them that seemed unstoppable.

I was deeply impressed by the nobility and outsider nature of the music. It was very Brighton and even now coming up on ten years since the first and last time I heard that strange music I still joke about it with my friends. Just a couple of days ago I was making such a joke, I compared the The Arcade Fire to a younger version of the Tragic Roundabout but with a stylist (which is cruel because Arcade Fire are accomplished musicians), while I was working at the computer and it suddenly occurred to me that Tragic Roundabout might still exist and might even still be making their music so I googled them and .. drum roll... I found a MySpace sight [sic], and one look confirmed that it could only be them, from the band shot down to the fly walking over the surface of the screen, but how would the music sound compared to the music in my memory. Had they practiced and got good, had they sold out and gone boy band. I braced myself and hit play on the music widget thing.

“When we first got together there were 15 of us,” says Tragic Roundabout clarinettist Pat Popov. “We went over to a busking competition in Ireland, near Cork. That was where it started from.

“We got put on a traffic roundabout right on the outskirts of the city, because we’d been billed as, if I recall correctly, 15 harmonicas and a banjo. They thought we were going to make a racket, so they put us by a main road on the edge of town.

“We thought b***** that and got ourselves disqualified by leaving the pitch and going up into town busking in all the pubs. We ended up making more than the prize money was anyway. It was a bit anarchic in those days. It still can be, actually.”

Tragic Roundabout had found their name, but were to undergo numerous personnel changes before settling on their current line-up of “five musicians and a drummer”. In addition to Popov’s clarinet, the band now consists of banjo, accordion, drums, bass, guitar and occasional brass parts. They play raucous gypsy punk of the kind made famous by Gogol Bordello, although Tragic Roundabout predate Eugene H¸tz’s group.

“We’ve been together for close to 20 years in different guises. It started off as a really rough, loose busking collective,” Popov explains. “We were just doing what the hell we wanted to really. We’d turn up at festivals without tickets and play on the gate until they let us in, that sort of thing.

“In the 1990s it gelled together as the outfit it is today. It’s sort of an Eastern European punky flavour with a bit of klezmer in there.”

The band’s debut release, Here Comes The Lino Man, came out in 1994 and they hope to record their sixth album in the near future. They’ve taken their uplifting, freewheeling live show across Europe many times and remain festival mainstays, having already appeared at Glastonbury and Hawkwind’s Hawkfest this year.

Popov is looking forward to seeing tonight’s co-headliners, Gadjo, play live for the first time. Their concerts have the same flamboyant energy of street entertainment and employ a dizzyingly broad array of instrumentation, including double bass, melodica and tuba.

The Barcelona-based group’s lyrics are written in French, Spanish and English and touch upon such unorthodox subjects as infatuated accordions, gold teeth and illegal living. The title of their most recent album, Para Yayas Y Gamberros, translates as “for grannies and hooligans”.

“They do a similar sort of thing,” says Popov. “Balkan rhythms and a gypsy vibe.”

Thanks to Hawkwind for a fantastic weekend at Hawkfest. They showed us all how it should be done. Also thanks to Magnus from Tarantism who played bass with us while Mr. Lawson was otherwise indisposed of at a secret location in a garden somewhere in Cambs. or something. Nice one Magnus! It was nice to see some old friends, 3 Daft Monkeys as well. They played a set on Saturday night and got all the rockers jigging and reeling. Also check out Uncle Rotter who played on Sunday night (but not if you're at work). They're an outrageous glam metal band from Manchester.

We played at the Trowbridge Village Pump Festival on Friday night which was great fun. Elton Jo brought the house down with his impromptu accordion encore. Max Pashm played with his new band as well. Then it was over to the river where we busked on the bridge to whoever would listen. It was a bit like the old days. But posher.

There will be workshops, stalls, walk around entertainment and of course the usual children's area with a variety of activities.
The line up is looking good too with some amazing bands across a whole variety of genres."

We like playing on piers at the moment. It wasn't all that long ago we were on Aberystwyth pier. We're playing on the Palace Pier in Brighton again on Friday at Horatio's Bar. Here's a picture of the pier with an arrow showing you where the pub is.

The Bandstand was great!!!
We stood on this thing,as a band,and really felt like we were a band standing on this thing.This "Bandstand" was really the kind of thing on which a band could really stand!! Unlike the Cafe Tango stage,on which -personally- I failed to stand on for any length of time...!
Aaaahhh.....The 4th of July.....not as good as Friday 13th...........better than thursday 12th!

Saturday the 7th June is Strawberry Fair on Midsummer Common in Cambridge. We'll be playing on the stage in the Green Area at 8:45. Our not so old drummer Matt Emotion is back for the night standing in for Lightnin' Lacey so it's gonna be the rockingest man!

Friday the 13th we are going to be brave and get out of bed to play at Le Vagabond Boogaloo Club at Barden’s Boudoir, 36 Stoke Newington Rd, London Town with Czech gypsy rock 'n' roll band Terne Chave.

26th-29th June it's only bleedin' Pilton Pop again! You can catch us on the Bandstand and in various places, forms and states over the weekend.

We're off to the Small World Spring Festival again this year (22nd-26th May at Headcorn in Kent). It's a festival of creative spirit & sustainable living powered by the wind and sun so hopefully it will be nice and sunny and windy. The Small World website is here.
The weekend after that we'll be at the Bath Fringe Festival. We're playing on Sunday afternoon (1st June) in the Spiegeltent which is a big 1930s wood and mirror paneled tent. Very posh. We might pop in to the Sunrise Celebration at some point over the weekend too and then it's off to Strawberry Fair in Cambridge for the 7th.
